There are plenty of ocean activities in Hilo including surfing, swimming, snorkeling and lots more. It’s one of the best starting points to explore the incredible Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
Walk along the picturesque Bayfront in Hilo and stop at the shops along the Kamehameha Avenue. You’ll definitely want to take home beautiful hand made fabrics, artwork, Hillo hats and t-shirts. There is a wide variety of cuisine to sample including traditional “loco moco”, Japanese “chirasi bowls”, pizzas, Mexican corn tortillas and of course the delicious locally made ice creams. Although it’s a small town, you’ll find a lot of places for cocktails and live music. Check out Shooter’s, Cronies or Charley’s for an evening of entertainment.

It’s only 40 minutes away for the town center, where the lava flows of the Kilaua, Other important sights include the Akaka and the Rainbow Falls, the Pana’ewa Rainforest Zoo, and the statue of King Kamahema. The Nani Mau Gardens is the home to tropical flowers, fruits, orchids and orchards. If you’re free at noon, you can have fun browsing the Pacific Tsunami Museum as well as the Lyman Museum.
